How the Pitman (2-2-3) pattern works

Pitman is the 2-2-3 rotation with fixed crews: day crews always work days and night crews always work nights. When the cycle starts on a Monday, the first week is Monday and Tuesday on, Wednesday and Thursday off, Friday to Sunday on; the second week is the mirror image, which leaves Friday to Sunday free. Some employers call the same layout Panama or 2-3-2, and the rotating version of it has its own page.

Also searched for as: 2-2-3 schedule, 2-3-2 schedule, Pitman 12 hour shifts, fixed Pitman.

The cycle is 14 days long: 2 shifts, 2 days off, 3 shifts, 2 days off, 2 shifts, 3 days off, and then it starts again.

Good and bad about Pitman (2-2-3)

In its favour

  • Never more than three shifts in a row
  • A three-day weekend every other week when the cycle starts on a Monday
  • Fixed crews let people keep a steady sleep routine

Against it

  • Needs four crews for round-the-clock cover
  • Depending on where the week starts, one week can hold five 12-hour shifts
  • People on fixed nights are out of step with daytime life

Who uses Pitman (2-2-3)

Widely used for 12-hour shifts in policing, emergency services, manufacturing and hospital units that run round the clock.

Employers run these patterns in slightly different ways, and a union contract or roster can differ from the version here. The grid above is exact for the cycle shown: if your roster differs, choose “My own cycle” in the calendar and type it in.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a week is Pitman (2-2-3)?

On average 42 hours a week, at 12 hours a shift: 7 shifts in every 14-day cycle. The weeks are not all alike, so a single week can hold more or fewer hours than the average. Change the shift length in the calendar and every number follows.

How many days off a year do I get on Pitman (2-2-3)?

About 183 days off in a 365-day year and about 183 shifts, with a longest run of 3 shifts and a longest break of 3 days. Put your real start date in the calendar for the exact count in your year, including how many weekends are fully off.

What is the difference between Pitman and Panama?

Both are 2-2-3 patterns with four crews. Sources describe Pitman as fixed (day crews stay on days) and Panama as slowly rotating (crews swap between days and nights), but employers use the two names interchangeably. Check your own roster; the Panama page shows the rotating version.

Is the 2-2-3 schedule the same as the 2-3-2?

Usually, yes. Some employers write the same 14-day layout (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off) starting from a different block, which turns 2-2-3 into 2-3-2. The days worked are the same; only the point you start counting from differs. Pick the block your own roster starts with in the calendar above.

Can I put the Pitman (2-2-3) pattern in Google Calendar or on my phone?

Yes. Pick your start date, press Add to my calendar, and open the .ics file in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. Each shift has a fixed ID, so importing the file again later replaces your shifts instead of adding a second set.
